Things to Know Before you Go

Currency Used:

Mexican Pesos *due to the high volume of tourism many resorts also accept United States Dollars

Main Methods of Payment:

Ideally you should use cash, if not, use a pin-protected credit card where accepted. Be careful while using a bank card in lesser known parts of the city.

Sales Tax/ GST:

16% - Often this tax is included in the total cost of restaurant bills, store purchases, and tours, so you probably won't even notice it.

General Climate:

In Cancun, the summers are hot, oppressive, wet, and overcast and the winters are comfortable, muggy, and mostly clear. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 67°F to 90°F and is rarely below 58°F or above 93°F

Getting Around the City:

Uber no longer operates in Cancun so travelers are reliant on taxis and private car rental services. You can use the bus system but in terms of safety we would recommend sticking to taxis and private cars. You should also check with your hotel or resort to see if they have a shuttle service available for their guests.

Electronic Appliance Support:

The electricity standard is 110-volt AC, the same as in the US and Canada. Three prong outlets are not readily available so an adaptor is a good idea. Electrical stores in Cancun have them in stock. The larger hotels have converters for most 220-volt devices.

Safety:

There is a long history of ups and downs with regards to safety within the city. Most people will agree that it's best to stay near or around your resort or hotel and exercise caution when setting out on your own. Ask the staff at the place you are staying to ensure the places you want to visit are safe. Especially at night.

Cultural Norms:

Cancun is known for its stunning beaches and the resorts have some amazing amenities. You should be careful when going into the city as there are pockets that are unsafe. Be cautious when leaving the resorts and hotels. When you go shopping be prepared to bargain. The shopkeepers expect it and often the initial price of goods is almost always marked up.
